2011 Grande Meadows Golf Championship

Hey everyone:
Just a quick note along with a few photos taken this past weekend after our annual Grande Meadows Club Championship tournament.
I shot a score of 79 0n Sunday to win the Championship for the 3rd time by one stroke. I made a birdie on the very last hole and won over one of the people who led me by one stroke after Saturday's round.
We had a very windy Saturday where we had to contend with 80 km winds which came on the tail of Hurricane Maria which passed through Friday. Golfers were running after caps that blew off, constantly picking up golf clubs that blew over or in the case of one golf cart and bag - it blew into one of the ponds. The wind was blowing putts all over the place.
Sunday dawned a much better day - sunny with only light winds about 30km so everyone felt much better. The scores were quite a bit lower and I managed to shoot a much better score after having a 90 in the wind on Saturday.
Below are some photos taken during and after the awards presentation. I got a little keeper trophy that Gladys has sitting on top of the television stand. As well a couple of the photos are of two moose that I came very close to on Sunday morning at 7:15 am while on my way to the course. They came up off the side of the road from the brush and I was very close to them when I got the car stopped.
Hope all is well and enjoy the photos.
Barry

Cheryl's Visit to Marystown

Hi everyone:

Cheryl, Greg, Sarah and Chelsea came to visit us in Marystown from August 13 - 22 this summer and the following is a little synopsis of that visit in text and photo form.

Right off the plane we took a side trip to St. Phillips for fish and chips - it's usually a first when Cheryl arrives - best fish and chips we know of. From there we took a side trip to Dildo to see Cheryl's Aunt Tish and Uncle Darren. Then it was on to Marystown.

While visiting here the weather was great so they took credit for bringing it with them. That resulted in us being able to get in a full week of activities. For instance, we went to St. Lawrence to visit Chambers Cove, the site of the wreck of two American war ships in 1942. It was a great hike there and the cliffs were amazingly steep so it's difficult to imagine what those sailors the hardships had to endure to get help in a February storm. There were 12 of us on the hike as Glayds's sister Mary and her husband Lem came along as well as Cheryl's good friend Jocelyn and her 2 month old baby, William plus her parents Robert and Delphine. It was a little foggy but otherwise a fun hike. From there we travelled around the Boot and back to Marystown.

Another day they all went to the beach at the Golden Sands Resort which they really enjoyed. The water was warm and the waterslide provided great fun for all the kids -Atlantic near Jean de Baie which you can see in one of the photos. While there we picked a few wild blueberries which was eaten with breakfast one morning. However, most mornings Cheryl, Greg, Sarah and Chelsea went to Nan Brennan's for toast. At Wild Beach they checked out the little sea creatures around as well as diverted the water in a little brook coming from a pond. The girls spent some time in the water, both fresh and salt while making an imprint of their bodies in the sand. Another treat for them was Gladys's brother Mike took Sarah to Wild Beach on his Ural and gave Chelsea a ride home on it. They quite enjoyed that.

We went to St. John's on Sunday to take a boat trip from Bay Bulls to see whales and puffins. It was a beautiful day and two humpback whales put on a show for us and we did get to see the bird sanctuary where hundreds of thousands puffins breed. As you can see in some of the photos everybody had a good time on the tour. Sarah and Chelsea didn't get to kiss the cod but we did the next best thing - we had them kiss the Puffin's Butt.

From there we spent the rest of the day and Monday in St. John's looking around Signal Hill, the Geo Center, George Street as well as going to the Chocolate Factory.

Throw into that the fact that there was a lot of eating and socializing going on we had a great week together. We had everybody here from both sides of our families on Saturday for a barbecue and lo and behold as soon as I turned on the barbecues, we noticed that we had a water leak in under the kitchen sink. Thanks to some fast work by Gladys's brother Gerard and her brother-in-law Pad things were fixed in a short time and we were able to continue without any major interruptions.

As well, Greg and I managed to get in a round of golf one day while the ladies went to dinner with both our mothers as well as Bernadette and Joan. Gladys and her brother Gerard took Sarah and Chelsea up to the Tolt in his Jeep so they could get a good look at Marystown from high on the hill. The girls really enjoyed swimming at the Marystown swimming pool.

I have quite a few photos in no particular order so take a look and I hope you enjoy them.
Cheers,
Barry
