Saturday February 16th - Fishing Trip

Hey there:
This past Saturday was a great day for an ice fishing trip and since Terry King wanted to get his son Robert out in the fresh air to try his luck, myself and Tyler joined them.
We left home at 7:30am to go to try our luck for some smelts in Salt Pond, Burin. After an hour and  no luck with the smelts and having caught only 1 trout we decided to try our luck in another pond about 20 minutes north of Marystown. We spend an hour there and caught only 3 small trout so off we went to try our luck at one more pond about 10 minutes further north. We'll it seems the fish were biting there and after a couple of hours fishing we had a total of 24 pan sized trout. We all had a good time but the two young boys, Robert and Tyler were tired by this time and both were fast asleep before we reached Marystown.
As well Robert had his 9th birthday party from 6:00 - 8:00pm that evening so by the time that was over he was really tired and ready for a good night's sleep.
I managed to capture some of the fun we had that day in a few photos which I shared below.

Enjoy.

Mom's 90th Birthday

Hi everyone:
Just wanted to let you know that mom celebrates her 90th birthday on April 3. She is looking forward to it and has questions concerning who is coming home and what we have on the go.
I'm sure she would love to hear from any or all of  you. I'll leave her phone number and mailing address below so if you'd like to contact her.
She is feeling pretty good these days and loves for someone to come visit or call. It helps break up the monotony of long days. Her sight isn't that good as she has macular degeneration but she remembers all of you and would be delighted to tell us that you called or sent a card.
As of now it seems like all her children except Terry will be in Marystown for her birthday on April 3.  From what I've heard Pat and Evelyn will be in NL around the middle of March to mid April. Lucy, Junior and Christopher along with Bob will be coming on Good Friday, March 29 for a week while Kevin and Diane along with Gerard will be hitting Marystown on Easter Sunday. Kevin can only stay until Thursday while Gerard will stay until the following Sunday. Brian said he and Julie were coming but I haven't heard when they would be here. As well Cheryl is coming in on Thursday April 4 for a few days and I think that Tracey along with Emma may be coming but it isn't final yet.
These are along with the folks that are here in Marystown which includes Terry King and his family who moved back here from Toronto last summer.
As well, Pamela, Danny, Devon and Catherine along with Colin and Hope are planning to come too. We have booked Wong's Palace Restaurant for Dinner at 6:30pm on Wednesday April 3 and we will continue the celebration for a while after - just not sure where yet! And we may start it earlier in the day too.
As well there a few other family birthdays that first week of April as well: see below.

            April 1           Terry
            April 2           Bob
            April 3           Mother
            April 4           Kevin
            April 5           Bernadette

Mom is staying with Joan in Creston North and her phone number is 709-279-5344 while her mailing address is P. O. Box 27, Marystown, NL A0E 2M0.

As well if you'd like to send it to my address it is P. O. Box 917, Marystown, NL A0E 2M0 and my phone number is 709-279-1987.  My street address is 251A Ville Marie Drive, Marystown if sending by courier.
Any errors or omissions please let me know.

Cheers to all.

Barry

New York City Trip - Day 4 January 7

Hey guys:
Our last day in New York has arrived very quickly and we are up on the go early to cover as much ground as we can. We have a full agenda today.  We checked out of our hotel but left our luggage to pick up later in the day.
This morning we took a taxi to downtown Manhattan to visit Battery Park where we can get a view of the Statue of Liberty among other tourist attractions there.  We couldn't take a boat ride to see the statue as the area is still being repaired from the damage done from Hurricane Sandy last fall.  After a walk around Battery Park checking out the scenery we were off to check out Wall Street.
Cheryl was very interested in Wall Street which is the centre of the business for North America or the World or so it seems. It's a very small street but houses lots of financial businesses including the New York Stock Exchange. We made sure to take some photos from there which you can see below.
Next we were off to one of the highlights of our trip - a visit to the site of the Twin Towers disaster where we went on a walking tour with 2 ladies one of which was on the 38th floor of the South Tower when the plane hit. It was a very emotional tour and the lady was very emotional in recounting the events of that day as she saw them. After the tour we went inside the building where there is a makeshift memorial to the people who were lost. A more permanent Museum is being built but isn't ready to be opened yet.
We then took a taxi ride through the Tribeca and SoHo Districts before we went to Lombardi's Restaurant for piazza. Lombardi's was featured on one of Gladys's favourite tv shows Amazing Race last year so we had to go check it out. The piazza was amazing.
After Lombardi's we were off to do a walking tour of Little Italy, Chinatown, Nolita (North of Little Italy), SoHo and Greenwich Village. It took us a couple of hours to look around at some of the neat buildings which were a stark difference to midtown Manhattan.  Since it was such a nice sunny day it was nice to see so many people in the streets as well as the many vendors outside as well. A very neat area of New York to visit.
From there we took a stroll through Washington Square Park which is located in Greenwich Village. Also in the area of the park is New York City University which seems like it is part of the community. Except there were some signs you wouldn't know there was a university there.
We then took a taxi back to midtown to visit Carnegie Hall. Since there was some renovations going on we didn't get a tour but did get inside to look around. After Carnegie Hall we took one last look at Rockefeller Plaza and then walked back to the Royalton Hotel to collect our luggage.  From there it was off to Penn Station to take the train to Newark airport and our flight back to Toronto.
We had a great time there and hope to go back sometime to check out some of the sights we missed.
I hoped you enjoyed the photos.
Cheers,
Barry
