Ice Fishing

My nephew Terry King and I took an ice fishing trip recently to a pond off the Monkstown Road. We left home at around 7:00am and it was a great day with some wind but it wasn’t too cold. We arrived at the pond around 8:30am and drilled some holes. We had 2 augers - one was 6" which we used with a drill to bore the holes and the other a 4" one which we used to drill a few holes. I think we drilled 11 holes in total.

We did have a good day as we managed to catch 24 trout and have a little boil up. Terry has a “Kelly Kettle” which is a cute little rig. You can see a small little fireplace at the bottom where you burn the wood to heat up the kettle. It holds about 1.2 l of water and there is a chimney like hole up the center to let the smoke escape. Once the water is boiled you can put the beans & wieners on to heat them up. Great little rig. We enjoyed our little outing - hey Junior, you could be enjoying this all the time.

Enjoy the photos. Imagine having a hot cup of Tim’s on the pond. Lol

Here’s Terry Getting ready to drill another hole.

Me - drilling with the 4” auger.

They are biting a little and Terry is catching a few.

The total is piling up. Getting close to our 12 each limit.

Terry is preparing for our little boilup. The little round base is where you put the wood for the fire.

Fire is going and the kettle is on.

Put another log on the fire. This is how you feed the wood to the bottom stove.

Hard to see but the smoke comes up the chimney - the interior black hole there.

The water is boiled and the beans & wieners are on.

The chef is checking on the food. Tims has been made.

Terry is packing up as we are ready for home.
